About Mike

Mike Wood is a theatrical lighting designer based in New York City. His work has been seen throughout the country – most extensively in the Tampa Bay and central Florida region.

Mike’s primary work is in theatrical lighting design, and he prides himself on being able to work with a diverse group of collaborators towards a common goal. He believes in the raw transformative power of theatre and believes that every member of the production team plays an equally vital role in the success of any given project.

He is currently the Director of Technical Theatre at Collegiate School in New York, where he oversees the theatrical facilities, productions, and technical theatre curriculum for the theatre department. Before Collegiate, Mike served as an Adjunct Instructor of Theatre Design & Technology at Hillsborough Community College in Tampa FL and was the Technical Director, Production Manager, and Design Instructor at Howard W. Blake School of the Arts – a multi-million dollar performing arts magnet school in the heart of Tampa Bay.

Before his educational/instructional journey began, Mike operated a small production company which provided design, labor, and consultation services for events ranging from small concerts to lavish wedding receptions and corporate parties/events. He still enjoys working in these markets, though theatrical lighting is his true passion.

Mike has been nominated for and has won several awards and honors for his work in lighting design. A full list of awards and honors can be found here.

Mike is a proud member of United Scenic Artists Local USA-829 and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology.

personaWell, now that you’ve read the generic formal playbill bio type stuff, let’s just talk personally. My name is Mike Wood, and every day I wake up not believing that I get to do this for a living.

I am a theatrical lighting designer based in NYC, where I also teach theatre design and technology at the Collegiate School on the UWS.

As it said in the formal section, I enjoy working with a diverse group of collaborators on exciting projects wherever they may be. I really believe that theatre has the power to change lives, because I’ve seen it happen before my very eyes several times.

One of my core philosophies towards theatre is that every single member of the production team is equally as important as any other member. Directors, Actors, Designers, Crew, Musicians, Venue Staff, and more are all 100% completely vital to any theatrical experience. I believe that when we all work together, the final product is something that will stay with the audience for the rest of their lives.

The best part about this business is the people. I love sharing my life and sharing my work with the people in this business. I’ve had the honor to work with several gifted theatrical artists in my career, and I’m always looking for new places to share my love for theatre. Please contact me today if you’d like to chat about your upcoming project.
